This site draws on the work of many others, both in terms of the research and in terms of the software used to present the findings.

Research

The foundations are the primary sources of Buddhists texts. For the elucidation of the Six Directions (or Dimensions) of the Sigalovada Sutta, I am very grateful to the Most Venerable Dattajeevo bhikkhu, who kindly granted me permission to reproduce and adapt his work, particularly the 3D depiction.

Website

The project makes use of a lot of wonderful freely available software. Most of these are standard and well-known to developers, but particularly for those who don’t know about such efforts, we wish to spell out some of these here.

The development platform is currently a Mac and uses a freely available package manager, Homebrew to provide the current versions of basic Web applications: Apache httpd (web server), PHP (scripting), and mariaDB (database).

This site has been created and managed using WordPress, using a simple custom child theme (named Sigala, of course!) of the Virtue theme produced by Kadence WP. The search facility is provided by a customised version of WP Static Search, a ‘drop in’ replacement for the standard WP search, itself built on lunr.js. It has been chosen/modified to not depend on any server-side scripts or particular server.

The static site is assembled using especially GNU software, including a home-made BASH script in which wget is used to retrieve the pages and convert all the links to work offline.
