This page explains a few technicalities of the Website. It has been generally built using free and open source software.
The site is presented as a series of static pages, which aids performance, security and portability. It has been created and is maintained in the WordPress content management system and then converted to a series of static pages that are kept in sync with the public-facing web server. The conversion has been carried out using wget, a popular command-line tool.
This means that there are no server-side scripts in use. You can download a copy of the site onto a memory stick and unzip it in any directory (as it uses relative paths). Furthermore, the site is searchable in your web browser in the same way. Normally, the standard WordPress search facility requires a server with support for scripts (i.e. you type http: or https: into the address bar). Not so here: a modified version of the WP Static Search plugin has been used as a ‘drop in’ alternative to remove that requirement.
So you are free to deploy the site on any web server (a really simple one that understands the basic http protocol will suffice) or transfer to the storage memory of your phone. It’s really ready to go!
